History of Pigments

INITIAL IDEAS


- Exploration of light and dark, black and white, subverting the colour psychology (black = death, impure, danger vs. white = pure, innocent, light)


- Exploring various shade of blue through a children's story through the diary of a pirate (e.g. sea, sky, jewels, etc.)


- Exploring pink and femininity




COLOUR RESEARCH



- Gets its name from British Royal Navy Officers wearing it in 1748 - became popular and distributed around the world as "navy blue"


- Part of Christmas research task - a colour I like


- Sits between yellow and green, combines the psychology of the two (yellow = optimism and energy, green = health and vitality). Representative of healing and good lifestyle. Gets the name "chartreuse" from its resemblance to French Chartreuse Liqueur.

- Mix of violet and red, is said to not even exist due to not actually being on the visible light spectrum. It is speculated our eyes fabricate it to fill the gaps. Considered a colour of harmony and balance.

EXPLORATION



- Exploration into pink

- Exploring the colour in relation to confidence and strength - pink said to be a provocative colour and one of assuredness

- Used to be associated heavily with masculinity, then transitioned to femininity after WWII

- Used to promote heavy causes such as Breast Cancer Awareness and CODEPINK's anti-war protests

- Pink tax is a phenomenon that could be commented on in society and society's view of femininity








- Always work a lot in black and white

- Enjoy high contrast pieces

- Tumblr post inspiring me to subvert colour psychology of light and dark

- Could be translated very well into paper crafts with black and white card









- Symbol of evil, mourning, sadness, darkness

- Can be seen as elegance, sexiness, decadence

- Ancient Egyptians said black had connotations of protection and fertility (the ground closest to the Nile)

- One of first recorded colours in art - charcoal, burnt bones, various crushed minerals




- Symbol of purity, innocence (Western cultures)

- Symbolises light, goodness, sacredness

- Can be seen as unnerving (connotations of medical settings), or deadly and ghostly, symbolises mourning, grief, and loss (Asian cultures)

- First ever colour in art - chalk and calcite

- Comfort zone is black and white but the comfort zone with the colours will allow more experimenting with the techniques and outcomes
