Creating the Book Illustrations

 INITIAL IDEAS

- Grey gouache paint and lino

- Character and background to be in a light, dream-like grey gouache wash, both in the same environment

- Cat and horse characters to be in solid black and white lino prints that contrast the delicate paintings

- Illustrate that they are not of the same world

PAINTING THE PAGES

- Started all pages with lightest grey gouache paint, very watered down

- All on A3 cartridge paper

- Really tried to balance weight of paint on pages as gouache is built in layers

-  Used only black, white, and grey gouache

- Using white last gave a cool blue tint to the paintings, due to being put down onto already-dried grey

- Liked this and wanted to ensure everything remained consistent throughout, therefore made sure to apply white paint last

- Wanted all painting to be very delicately done

All finished paintings

- Added details in brush pen only to character Venna

- Though keeping it delicate, decided the paint job was a little too insipid

- Character wasn't the focal point

- Gave selective outlines to her using a brush pen

CREATING LINO PRINTS

- Black lino ink on white paper for cat

- White lino ink on black paper for horse

- Used tracing paper around sketches and paintings to ensure prints would fit well on page

- Printed and painted everything to size in order to avoid resolution issues with resizing

- Cut everything into smaller stamps

- Allowed them to be labelled and printed more than once

- Used large blade for most, the smaller blade for detail

All cat stamps before printing

My pictures have vanished :(

But all my prints were hung up on my walls to dry
