Exploring designing characters

"To create a believable character, you need to live with it, draw it over and over again, and know your character inside out and from every angle. Get inside it - know their personality and emotions, and give it life through your mark making - presence, weight, form, and shape.

Students are encouraged to try a range of different mediums, to explore a range of mark making techniques within their designs."

INSPIRATIONS

- Haley Newsome (aka Lavendertowne)

- Content creator, illustrator and comic artist

- Hundreds of videos explaining her creative process, very inspiring to watch and listen to her creative process

- Every character always has distinct features

- Particularly interesting video of her character design process: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jkAJPsiM1Y0

- James Norbury

- Author and illustrator

- Simple style and character designs - adore the design of Tiny Dragon

- Character lineups look excellent as characters are distinct from one another

- Enough detail to communicate the character

SHAPES

- Challenged to draw characters from arbitrary shapes

- Thinking out of the box

- Resulted in characters I would have never drawn

- More constricting of two tasks given

- Arbitrary blobs of paint

- Making characters from whatever we see fit

- Much more fun than the shapes

One of favourite character designs - simple, cute, creepy

Another favourite design - has narrative elements for a good horror story, reminiscent of The Thing

STAMPS

- Boyfriend had just introduced me to the game 'Outer Wilds'

- Characters you play as are four-eyed blue aliens with big pointed ears sticking horizontally

- Wanted to emulate this character while keeping in mind the simple style of a 'Hollow Knight' character (platformer game) with their simple bodies and limbs

- Chose to give the character little boots as I thought it would be cute to mix and match with other people's character stamps

- Also had the option of using funky foam (recommended to try both rubber stamping and funky foam)

- Carved in very quick little alien, more inspiration taken from Outer Wilds

- Let ink dry too much on first attempt

- Could have been a little more detailed and well-thought-out, but was interesting to try the medium

- Worked back into best print with brush markers and fineliner

- Tried to make use of complimentary colours and use purple and yellow (opposite on the colour wheel) for striking alien colour scheme
