"This module aims to build on the drawing and visual communication skills you started developing last semester, in creating appropriate visual languages for your subject matter. You will use these skills effectively to produce convincing, innovative designs for characters, to appear in a narrative storyboard, in a genre of your choice."
THE DESIGN PROCESS
- Design process started in doing walk cycles in animation module
- Wanting to start to solidify a character design, using research of wardrobe and appearances from the era
- Old Western theme
- Clear-cut silhouette important - wanting to produce illustrations with a lot of low-lighting situations, therefore silhouette is essential

| Billowy coat would have been fun, but was not worn by the real Billy the Kid, and also masked a lot of the silhouette |
- Tried to loosen up and sketch quickly with no reference
- Thought using a brush pen would automatically add more character (didn't work)
- Decided to do some quick pencil gesture drawings
- Refine those that were most successful
- Gesture drawings helped to loosen up
- Tried to work with tone and create a moody atmosphere
- Still not happy with style but seemed to have solidified a design (hair, wardrobe, props, silhouette, etc.)
- Final character design (not style)
- Billowy shirt, rolled up sleeves, done-up waistcoat as seen in real photographs of Billy the Kid
- Same angled hat, plain trousers
- Boots with spurs, given gun holster when storyboarding too
