Printing and Binding

 THINGS TO NOTE

- Wanted to make a concertina as I have done it before

- Concertina eradicates middle margins, so spreads can go across two pages

- Middle Turkish map fold would need printing by the Print Bureau and on lighter paper

- Waterfall card would be printed on same lighter paper and constructed from scraps

PRINTING

- All work printed on A3 on MattePlus paper, 260gsm

- Bleed of 3mm on each edge, and crop marks to assist with cutting and folding

- 300dpi B&W photograph settings

- Middle page printed by Print Bureau onto A1 banner of 120gsm

- Allowed for folding with minimal creasing and cracking

- All pages cut down by hand with a guillotine

- Bound by PVA glue

- Messed up measurements of middle page multiple times so had to re-print; everything else went well first time

- Cover made as a 3-way fold concertina cover

- Like CD slip

- Not permanently glued into either side - allows for movement of the spine, which, in a concertina book, is irregular

- End pages, middle page, and cover all made from one A1 piece of black card

- Hand-wrote title and cover pages

- Traced from Adobe's Garamond font

- Was going to lino print it but wanted it to be more sleek than choppy lino prints

- Edges were slightly choppy due to trying to keep the spine as straight as possible

- Taken to machine that cuts it off evenly (thank you Jim from the Print Bureau)

- Took off 1mm

- Neatened it up without destroying waterfall cards or folds

FINAL BOOK

- Video of full flip-through in separate blog post

- Very pleased with book overall

- Learned how to print from InDesign and how to edit in Photoshop

- Tells a simple but beautiful tale that can be enjoyed by any age

- Inspiration taken from The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse by Charlie Mackesy, and Big Panda and Tiny Dragon by James Norbury
